Ghost of Tsushima – First Impressions2nd July 2019
Every time I see the trailer or look at screen shots of Ghost of Tsushima I get flashbacks to Tenchu Stealth Assassin on the PS One. Perhaps it’s just the setting and nothing more.
It’s rare that a samurai game catches my attention and come to think of it I think the last one was Tenchu, the first game.
Ghost of Tsushima Trailer
So enough of me waffling on, bursting with excitement and take a couple of minutes to drool over the official Ghost of Tsushima trailer below.
What’s the Story?
The year is 1274. Samurai warriors are the legendary defenders of Japan. until the fearsome Mongol Empire invades the island of Tsushima, wreaking havoc and conquering the local population.
As one of the last surviving samurai, you rise from the ashes to fight back. But honourable tactics won’t lead you to victory.
You must move beyond your samurai traditions to forge a new way of fighting, the way of the Ghost, as you wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Japan.
Ghost of Tsushima Gameplay
At E3 2017 Sony and Sucker Punch showcased the gameplay. Again this looked nothing short of pure beauty from a graphical perspective. The tone kind of reminds me a little of Driveclub with the lighting.
Ok so we know you have a trusty stead that you can walk with or gallop across the fields of long grass. I hope you get to name your horse.
The video also shows you come up against what appears to be bandits who meet their bloody end by your sword. The sounds of slashes, stabs, chops and death are all there along with slow motion death moments. If not a little over the top.
You get to act stealthily by crouching and sneaking around a nod in my books to Tenchu. I wonder if you get to use other weapons such as bow and arrows like some of the other characters in the game.
In the gameplay footage we also see that there are also more tactical one on one battles that require a bit more thought. Be prepared to block, roll and attack to succeed.
I wonder if it’s going down the same roots as From Softwares Souls games with the level of difficulty.
Final Thoughts on Ghost of Tsushima
They do say that first impressions last and for me that’s definitely the case with Ghost of Tsushima. It looks beautiful, gameplay looks fun and the story looks deep.
So when is the Ghost of Tsushima release date? There hasn’t been an announcement yet but many speculate that it could possibly be late gen release or even a PS5 launch title.
Either way this is a game I’ll be sure to pick up around launch.
Thank you for taking the time to read my gaming article about Ghost of Tsushima. Hopefully you are as excited about this exclusive PlayStation 4 game as I am.
