Injustice: Gods Among Us – Ultimate Edition Review

This is my Injustice: Gods Among Us – Ultimate Edition review. The game is a beat-em-up developed by the guys and gals from NetherRealm Studios. Does the name ring a bell? That’s because they’re more well known for the Mortal Kombat series. So you can instantly get an idea of the type of fighting game to expect. Brutal and exciting.

The game features DC comic icons such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern and much more. Most of the characters are playable at some point throughout the lengthy single-player story. This original theatrical story that has been written by NetherRealm Studios, DC Entertainment, and writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti.

The story is cinematic and exciting for the most part although can sometimes feel like it’s dragging a little, this is forgiven as there’s plenty of fighting that takes place throughout.

Pleasing on the eye

The graphics in the game are excellent, animations are smooth and if you play on the PS4, Xbox One or PC then the game really shines. One downside is that yet again it is another port from last gen rather than a new game created for the newer gen consoles. But it is a good port.

Fun and exciting to play

The gameplay is cool and leaves you coming back for more. Each character has their own special move that’s activated when their gauge fills up and the appropriate buttons are pressed. There’s a huge sense of satisfaction when these brutal moves are executed.

One thing that makes the game stand out from other fighting games is the controls. NetherRealm Studios have chosen to keep the moves the same for all characters in the game. This makes it one of the more accessible fighting games than say your Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat games of the world. They demand the player to focus and learn a specific move list for each character.

As you don’t have to learn and remember a million different moves the game is a huge amount of fun and is exciting.

There are 30 playable characters in total, in a variety of sizes and with enough difference in powers to things feeling fresh. All of the characters are well balanced.

There’s a strong sense that Mortal Kombat has had an influence on Injustice: Gods Among Us. The brutality of the fighting is there but not quite up to the level of Mortal Kombat.

Each fighting stage in the game has been taken from the DC Universe and are multi-levelled. Characters can be kicked, thrown and punched through walls onto other areas of the stage. Players can also interact with the backgrounds, if you’re stood in certain positions you will see a flashing button icon in the corner of the screen to perform the move.

Lots to see and do

The lengthy single-player game is accompanied by a variety of multiplayer modes online and offline. These include ranked matches, private matches such as; king of the hill, 1v1 and survivor mode. You can also set up private matches where you can invite friends to join you and view online leader boards.

As you would expect from a fighting game there’s also a local multiplayer mode. This is great for quick bouts with friends that have come over to party with you.

There is a huge amount of collectables that can be unlocked. These can all be viewed in the bonus features section of the game.
