Spider-man, The Best Game This Generation?4th June 2019
Spider-man on PlayStation 4 is one of those once in a console generation games. They are rare diamonds in the rough. It could possibly be the game of the generation. At the time of writing this, in my eyes it is.
Yes, there is the highly acclaimed God of War, the hugely loved Horizon Zero Dawn and the phenomenal Red Dead Redemption 2 that are all up there. They all offer highly polished products with great stories and fun, gripping gameplay but Spider-man took the biscuit for me.
What’s the Story?
We all know the origin story of how Spider-man became so developers Insomniac games decided to skip all that. No need to tread over old ground yet again. Instead, they jump straight in with a brand spanking new story. Rejoice.
I’m not going to go through the story in every detail instead here’s a brief overview.
Peter Parker is working with Dr Octavius, who is trying to improve what we can do with prosthetic limbs. His relationship with Mary Jane Watson is more or less over.
Norman Osborn is mayor, and J. Jonah Jameson is an Alex Jones-style podcaster spouting conspiracy theories and misinformation. Aunt May is working in a homeless shelter, trying to help the community. Mary Jane is a reporter for the Daily Bugle.
In the game’s main storyline, the super-human crime lord Mr Negative orchestrates a plot to seize control of New York City’s criminal underworld.
When Mr Negative threatens to release a deadly virus, Spider-Man must confront him and protect the city while dealing with the personal problems of his civilian persona, Peter Parker.
That’s all I can really say about the storyline without spoilers but it’s very entertaining.
So what makes the game so much fun and a joy to play. For one the storyline is engaging.
The fluidity of Spider-man is perfect you swing through the city, around buildings, under bridges, wall run, catapult yourself over the rooftops, the list of movements is endless.
Fight Like a Spider
Another main feature of the game that’s executed so well is the combat. The developers at Insomniac Games should be proud of themselves for pulling something so great off. The more you play the more skill points you gain that you can spend on upgrading Spider-man to learn more moves.
There are so many moves that you will probably complete the main story before unlocking every one of them.
The combat is fast paced, slick and satisfying. Throws, punches, kicks, slams webbing baddies to walls and sorts of objects and more really gives you that sense of being the Spider-man. Good stuff.
Hey Good Looking
Spider-man is is an amazing technical feat of engineering. Easily one of the best looking games of any generation so far. If this is the level games can become in this era of gaming then just imagine what the future holds.
The lighting, shadows, special effects and character models are stunning but the true star of the show is the city itself. The way light sets bounces off the buildings at sunset is beautiful. The reflections and just the sense of scale are jaw-dropping.
The graphics in Spider-man are on another level.
Let’s Get Busy
Many open world games try and many fail to provide an open world that is full of life and activity. Spider-man nails it perfectly.
From drone races, stopping crimes to collecting pollution and taking photos of many major landmarks around the city and more.
There are side quest scattered around the city for you to complete and once you complete one another is revealed.
By completing missions and side quests and other activities you earn currency that you can spend on unlocking new suits and gadgets and then also upgrades for these items.
If you want a game to get lost in that grabs you by the horns with great gameplay and looks so great that you will want to show it off to everyone then Spider-man on PS4 is not to be missed.
